Baptism

So are you thinking about getting dunked for Jesus?  The word “dunked” takes us back to basics of baptism. It’s about getting doused with water because of our new faith in Jesus. Baptism isn’t a fancy religious ceremony, but an honest offering of your whole self to God.

WHY SHOULD I GET BAPTIZED?

We are called to be baptized because Jesus was baptized. Have you called Jesus the Lord of your whole life? Then baptism is where you start proving he is your leader. Some people might question the need to do anything more than to pray a personal prayer to follow Christ.  But Jesus set the example. If Jesus, who knew no sin, was baptized, then who are we not to follow him?

WHAT DOES BAPTISM DO IN MY HEART?

Baptism humbles us. It is very difficult to look impressive dripping wet! Humility was the core of baptism for the first disciples of Jesus. “Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River...” (Mat 3:6). Baptism is not a bath, it is a drowning.  Under the water you die to sin.  When you are raised up from the water, you are resurrected to live for God “...All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death...” (Romans 6:3). 

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO BE BAPTIZED?

Confess your sins to God. Confession is agreeing with God. What he calls sin, you call sin in your own life.

Repent of your sins. Repentance flows out of confession. Because we feel sorry for our sins, God begins to change our mind. Then things we once loved we start to hate. The things we hated we start to love. As Jesus said, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (Matthew 3:2).

WILL ANYTHING SPIRITUAL HAPPEN IN MY BAPTISM?

The Holy Spirit comes to those humbling themselves with baptism. It’s just like the first Christians were told, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38)

SHOULD I WAIT UNTIL MY LIFE IMPROVES A BIT BEFORE I GET BAPTIZED?

Don’t wait to be baptized. If you have confessed Jesus as your Lord and believe in your heart he is alive, then get baptized as soon as possible. The first Christians were baptized as soon as they were saved. Not feeling worthy of baptism is one of the evidences that you are ready to be baptized. You aren’t trusting in yourself. You are believing in Christ.
